Re: Which things will kill our cars? Common faults?
I expect the Honda engine alternator is an industry-standard type used on several different cars from that era, so spares for it are probably available to fix common faults such as the brushes/regulator or rectifier assembly. Have you been able to find equivalent part numbers from suppliers like Bosch or NAPA? The K-series (214) uses the Lucas A127 or equivalent and there are loads of electrical spares available for it. If the bearings have gone, then it's a bit more involved to repair it. I've reconditioned several alternators for our 214 over the years.
As a last resort, it's likely any 75A 12V alternator will work but you might need to modify the mounting slightly. Also need to check the direction of rotation. I assume the alternator is self-regulating and not relying on the ECU for that function as quite a lot of modern cars do. I can see that would be problematic if the Honda engine is designed that way.
Cheers,
Hugh

I brought the brushes for my 1991 416 Rover from this company.

Yes they are in france so p+p and import tax add to the cost. But their cross ref chart meant I could identify my alternator exactly and the appropriate brushes. I could have brought then on eBay for a little bit less but I was reliant on the seller telling me they would fit on

Re: Which things will kill our cars? Common faults?
Thanks for tasking an interest!
The original according to Haynes is a Nipon Denso but doesn't give a manufacturers part number. The fault is unusual, a battery short circuit to earth that kills a new battery in 4/5 days. It took 0.5 V out of a spare battery in a couple of hours. I'm assuming that is the alternator diode pack that does the rectification going partly short circuit.
I'm going to try these people in Essex tomorrow.
