Vinny's Rover 220 GSi Turbo Diary - September 2020, new alternator!

Post by Vinny1979 »

Well a long time in the making but this is the start of my project thread. Car was purchased in April 2010 @ circa 51k from Berger on Rovertech :sad

We are now into 2019 and the car has done 61000, it hasn't been on the road since December 2013 when I decided on a winter "tidy up" :laughing2

I have a full and extensive history with the car that I have added to over the years including the original sales receipt from 1994 iirc.

I will edit this properly as photo's are all out of sync and I have a lot to say :laughing2

Timeline

April 2010 - Bought car 220 GSi 51k
May 2010 - Turbo conversion from donor 420 GSi T (RIP)

Issues arose immediately, I knew the engine wasn't that great and was tired ( 100k ) but had good donor parts
November 2011 - Bought forged engine from Imran ( Rovertech ) formerly C2K and John C iirc
April 2012 Fitted forged engine week prior to POL 2012 engine was as new and car had covered 56k
Did a few car shows and drove occasionally
Dec 2013 - Took car off the road as needed to address gearbox and tired components
Summer 2015 - Stripped car to shell :laughing2
Over the next few years I gathered bits and pieces and refurbed stuff here and there
July 2018 - Over a week refitted virtually everything back to the car
Spring 2019 - Rebuild continues - Mileage 61k

So onto a few pics

On the Rover 200 stand next to Fatdave, I think this was a Peterborough show? Maybe Ferry Meadows 2013?

Had the bent wheel repaired March 2019

Very quick refurb of bent wheel, tbh I wanted to see what it painted like as the cost was sub £10. Work to do but would get me by for the summer of track days and a few shows before I decide what to do wheel wise

My buddies Corrado 1.8t we have been building, this has been the inspiration to get my car back together hence the mention, been to a few track days at Cadwell too, we have this Corrado 267bhp, my other buddy has a 258 bhp Renault Megane r26 and finally the last member has a 2.0 GTi 6 205. So between us we have some pretty fun cars! Recent images, plus some from Cadwell 30/05/19

Massive respect to you Vinny. Very, very trick spec. I can see why it has been so long off the road. :cool

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Any timescale for completion? I can remember following your re-build on Rovertech before it folded.

Thank you! Very kind, I have lots more to show looks much better now suspension wise and underneath etc most stuff is like new or as new

So the car moves, brakes (just!)

To do

Buy tyres ( Nankang ns2-r semi slicks)
Re bleed brakes
Re fit side spats
Re align bumper, bonnet and one wing as removed it all
Alignment
Possible knuckle ( passenger side )
MOT

Genuinely at 95% here! :)

It has taken longer as I have a family and cannot just throw cash at this, for a guess it owes me £5000 including buying it in 2010. Which I dont think is bad tbh. I have been picking up bits here and there as they pop up, any bargains I grab.

I dont need the tyres for an MOT as I can cobble together some, I wouldnt want a massive mot issue and £350 worth of tyres sat there :laughing2

So my Rimmer Bros order arrived today. the front bumper inserts. Needed slight modification but all fitted, gave me chance to check crash bar and bolts which were freed easily, and re fitted after the new trim went on

Im quite pleased with how it looks, front end isn't alligned yet but couldn't resist a few picures

Please ignore wheels as they are merely to keep it rolling

I'm truly blown away by your 220, it looks stunning Vinny. The red inserts look good. Dare I say, it looks a bit a like a 205 GTi. Personally, I think the silver alloys look better than the black. :cool Do you think you will have it finished in time for Gaydon on July 7th?

The rears are some brm wheels, I only have 2 Superlegerra's with tyres, the other are being refurbed. I need to run 17s for the brakes :laughing2

Its not perfect, the roof needs a respray at some point and a few bits and pieces, but overall for 25 years old its not too bad :laughing2

It does need a good clean but the paint does polish up well when I can be bothered and the spats need fitting again

I will photograph the bits I want to sort, but currently its what needs doing for the road

If that makes sense?

Funny you say about the 205. My friend has a white one.... with red inserts :laughing2

Regarding Gaydon, That would be nice if I could wouldnt it! :cool

My mrs hates the red. :laughing2 The chrome was fading and going clear in places so...
