Re: Website / forum issues

Post by Colonel Mustard »

New hosting has been arranged for the website and forum, and I will be moving them over the coming week. This involves pointing the name servers at the new host and can take between a few hours and a few days to take affect depending on several unpredictable factors. So during that time, you may be looking at the new servers or the old servers, but you'll never know! This is not a problem for the website because the content is controlled by me, and I can make sure that any updates are made to both old and new servers.

However the forum is a constantly changing beast, and if left to let nature (ie the internet!) take its course would eventually end up with missing posts and topics. To overcome this, what will happen is all visitors to the forum over the next few days will be automatically redirected to a temporary url hosted on the existing servers. You will not need to change how you navigate to the forum (eg rover200.org.uk/forums), but regardless of what you typed in you will notice the url in the address bar will be rovergroup.org.uk/forums. If you normally have your username and password saved in your browser, you may also find that you will need to manually type in these as your browser won't recognise the url.

Once I am sure that all traffic for the normal website is being directed to the new hosting servers, I will then transfer the forum across and remove the temporary divert. However, it will be necessary to take the forum off line for a few hours when I do this. I will give you advance warning here of when this is going to happen, and there will also be an announcement on the Club News page of the website.

Sounds a real "rear end" of a job.
Just wanted to say Thanks for spending your time sorting it out for the rest of us.

Cheers

I'm now seeing the website on the new server, so hopefully everybody else will be as well. You can tell by checking if the home page title says:

The official website of the Rover 200 & 400 Owners Club
or
* The official website of the Rover 200 & 400 Owners Club *

If you see the * at the start and end of the title you are still looking at the old server, and you may need to clear the cache on your browser (Cntl/Shift/R).

I plan to transfer the forum over to the new servers this afternoon, so you will not be able to access it from about 1pm. Hopefully everythng will be back to normal after a "few" hours! Whilst it is down, I will put a notice on the Club News page of the website.

Thanks for your patience.

Unfortunately the move did not go as planned, and so I have had to reinstate the old version. :sad

I will try again within the next few days (probably Thursday), but will let you know before the forum is taken off line again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Website / forum issues - Forum down Thursday 26th

Post by Colonel Mustard »

Well here goes, round 2! I'll be starting earlier tomorrow to give myself a better chance. So unfortunately the forum will not be available again from around 8am on Thursday 26th July. Updates will be available on the website News page.
