Forum update

Post by Smithy »

All,

I will be updating the forum software today. Unfortunately our current template (how the forum looks) is no longer supported for the current version. Hence this will mean the template will change to the standard phpBB version and no longer match the website design.

On the plus side the standard template is more responsive so it will be better on your tablets and phones and also the forum will be more secure.

Would anyone like me to look at a tapatalk plugin? Would people find it useful?

tapatalk is a forum viewer and a paid product at that which isn't very good.

Better on the web browser as far as i was concerned.

Save your self some effort as well, only import user accounts with 5 or more posts.

Thank you for sorting this - I understand it is to improve website security.

What will the forum look like afterwards?

I have never understood the advantages of TapaTalk so I wouldn't bother if I were you.

On not bringing over people who have posted less than 5 times I would keep them all, the forum is a window on the club and a good way of avertising it.

I was reading the forum long before joining, then it took me some time to make many posts when I did join and now I am a club member with a car.

Never seen the advantage of Taptalk! I view all my car forums in Opera Mini which means they show exactly the same as they do on desktop computer.
I had to check to see how many posts I had and thankfully I'm above 5 but their must be knew members who haven't reached 5 yet! Tricky one is their a way to import recent accounts below 5 ? or something ?

Don't worry all, no members are disappearing. Not sure what 1234dist is talking about there is nothing to import :S

Just an update with a new forum skin (standard phpbb one)

Think about how many spam bots have been created over the years.

If you go into the members section of control panel you will see 80% are 0-2 post spambot accounts.

Filtered by number of posts i was on page 25 out of 42 before it got to 5 posts or more, thats nearly 60%.

Reason for 5 and above is also anyone who is just a reader won't be to disappointed re-registering.

On the upgrade - is there any chance the site could support embedded videos (YouTube, etc.) ?? I've seen this support on other websites and it adds a whole new dimension. For example, for this site:

1. Meet videos / memories / historical records of turnout, etc. Good representation for the club on the site.

2. Repair / maintenance videos - if anyone has a "technique" for removing/refitting something you can't beat seeing a video of it.

3. Diagnostics - if the car is behaving strangely then a video would capture more of what was going on than just a textual description. All cameras/phones have video + sound recording capability, so capturing an "event" - a whine, knock or erratic engine behaviour, even if it means driving one-handed, is easy to do.

4. The original advertising videos for the R8 series the club has already put together.

5. Our own promo videos.

6. Humorous videos - for the chat and off-topic threads.

Just a thought.

I will have a look. We can't host them because of the bandwidth increase, but we can link to them.

There's some kind of embedded linking you can do, so the video plays from our website via the hosting service, usually YouTube. You just get a still picture / thumbnail in the thread until you click the play icon. The files look hosted locally, but they're not.
