Air Con Upgrade

Post by Bean66 »

Hi All

Newish member with a daft idea for my car.

I got my Streetwise Olympic this week, cheap as chips and not in bad nick but I’ve got an utterly mad idea.

As its an Olympic it looks great with the colour and Addendum alloys, err but has no air con, which I did want but decided to sacrifice that for the alloys and colour.

So has anyone fitted or tried to retro fit air con to a 25/ZR.

Now sense would say that as air con was available on 25’s and Streetwise the components are available and if I were building a car with aircon and non aircon versions the non aircon model would simply be missing bits rather than being a completely different design It would be daft to design and build an aircon heater unit and a different non aircon unit when you could design a single unit to fit in the same space and just not fit the aircon bits to a non aircon unit. Same with the compressor and heat exchanger etc.

So my thinking is get all those bits off a scrapper and fit them to mine, if and I know it’s a big if its doable in that way.

Cheers Bean

Well it is doable since I did it on Rover 200 'bubble' which is just older version of aircon.
However you will have a lot of work to do and among them you will need to add wires to your engine ECU (meaning you will need to add pins with wires to your existing connector, or cut that connector and swap it with air-con version, bit in that case you will have a lot of wires connectiong to do).

You will need to swap interior parts where evaporator need to be added, you will need new radiator added with additional fan for air-con with compressor and pipings and you will need to add wires for the switch in the cabin.

This is not all the list of parts you need, there is more, but this is just to get the idea what are you getting into.

We're doing this at the NEC this weekend !

Most of this will hopefully be fitted to an R3 over the course of the Restoration Show.

So come down and find out how. You could even get your hands dirty. If you joined the club online now or at the show we might even be able to get you a free show ticket for one of the days :cool
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos
