GTi rear spoiler installation onto non spoiler variant
GTi rear spoiler installation onto non spoiler variant
Just a few quick questions for people who either know or have done this before
I have a GTi spoiler from a now entirely scrapped 216GTi and I have been figuring out the best way to install it into my 214 SEi. The SEi does not have a spoiler, it never came with one, but the spoiler IS the right size for the car it just needs the drill holes which I can do quite easily.
First of all - There are two flange head screws on the far end of either side of the spoiler (4 total), thats fine, but in the middle there are two plastic cone shaped heads pointing downwards. I am assuming holes also need to be drilled for them as well as the flange screw but this hasnt been explained anywhere on the internet and I have never seen it in a spoiler before. It's difficult to explain but I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about.
Secondly, I need one replacement flange head screw but I cannot figure out the exact sizing as every time I measure it seems to give me another different reading. Where would the best place to get these be? Rimmers doesn't have the GTi spoiler on the site so theres no documentation as to what is required and what size they actually are. And what size drill bit would be best for drilling the holes into the tailgate?
I know I'm asking quite a bit about something that should be relatively straightforward (and probably is) but I dont really fancy screwing up and having to buy a whole new replacement tailgate
Thanks!

Haha hopefully
To be fair one of my questions has already been answered as when rooting through the depths of the internet I did find a picture of a car that had the GTi wing removed showing the tailgate holes which does confirm that the two plastic cones do need drill holes

That does slightly overcomplicate things, however, because it makes it more difficult to map out where the drill holes need to be because the whole spoiler will be raised. I'm thinking that the best option would be to drill the central holes first, lower the spoiler into them and then work out the outside hole situation. We shall see. For now I still need to sand and respray the old spoiler

I think your best option is to find someone who is working on theirs and has the spoiler off, or an old door with the holes in, and make a template from it. You could easily do one in cardboard. Maybe someone would be prepared to do this for you even. I've got a nos door that came with my GTi, but I don't know if it's already got the holes in it. Currently it's in my son's garage - next time I'm there I'll take a look.

I refitted my 220 spoiler about a month back. I can remember the the two middle pegs have to slot in, then push the whole thing back a bit to pull the center flush with the tailgate.

Spent today completely sanding and priming the spoiler, pretty happy so far, regardless of whether I get it on the car or not, I’ll be pretty pleased knowing that the spoiler is looking way better than it did, especially when it’s in nightfire
Forgot to take before pics but it was Tahiti blue but it was so scratched and chipped it was unusable

Probably spamming my own thread here but I decided to stick it on the car to see what it would look like as a "proof of concept" and I'm really really liking it, looks super classy. Not clear coated yet but I am dreading the spoiler template haha
