Hi All,

I have a 1998 Rover 216 Coupe with 103,000 miles on the clock. It is a K Series engine which has the triple layer gasket and steel bolts.

Recently I've had a new clutch fitted, new dizzy cap, HT leads, etc, and an engine flush but I've still got the lazy throttle response problem.

The best I way I can describe it is when I blip the throttle the engine responds but without any urgency, it feels as though there is air between throttle pedal and engine, and I get the same result when I blip the throttle from the engine bay.

Apart from this, she's driving fine with no lumpiness or hesitation when being asked to accelerate, just slow to pick up speed.

Any ideas, advice or fixes would be greatly appreciated as I'm constantly being left behind by smaller cars even when I hold the gears for longer than normal to try and catch up!

How much of a delay,

Physics has something to do with it.
Has to adjust how much fuel is squirted to how much air its received......it is 20yr old tech at the end of the day.

Struggles to keep up with modern traffic is a good analogy here, as the acceleration is there but it's definitely not as brisk as it once was.

It's not so much a delay as a sluggish response, it feels as though there is a balloon underneath the throttle pedal when it's pushed down and the response mirrors that. I don't know whether it's a tired spring in the throttle linkage somewhere for example, or perhaps linked to the fuel / air mixture that you referred to. As far as I know the injectors are fine, but then I've never had a car this old with this sort of mileage before.

My garage agrees that the throttle response is lazy but isn't sure at the moment what is causing it.

This certainly need looking into as something is not correct that is the mpg like? Get it a diagnostic computer

It is just a guess, but i think it might even be a blocked (soon to be) cat that might be causing the restriction.

I would also assume the breather pipe might have a fair itof oil in it due to pressure.

Without it being in front of me, can't really go much further, but we have some helpful locals near you.

Hopefully it's not the cat as that was replaced a little over a year ago with a Vauxhall Vectra one adapted to fit, as the Rover cats kept failing within twelve months leading to emissions that wouldn't pass the MoT.

Hadn't thought about the breather pipe though, so that could warrant further investigation.

If you have emision issues, adapting something to smother the gases output is not what i would class as a fix.

But hey, i paid £60 for a aerial because the one i had didn't go all the way down

I think there may be more underlying issues based around your hesitation and emission issues.

Agreed, but it sorted the emissions out and does away with having to have a new cat fitted every year, not at my expense I hasten to add.

Had a look at my Haynes manual last night and it's flagged up a few other reasons that could be causing it that I need to get looked at, one of which mentioned the breather pipe, so I think I'm getting closer to finding out what's wrong and getting it sorted.

I'd check the breather too, mine had a slight leak but as dist said it is old tech and mine
has a slight delay when blipping the throttle on idle but it still pulls away well, its located
by the dipstick in the pic below, my breather pipe is blue on that.





I will be converting mine to MEMS3 engine management and get rid of the dizzy drive
to go wasted spark, should run better, drive better, improve the MPG and emissions etc.

Have you tried new plugs and leads?
